To Be Young, to Be Married, to Be a Late Bloomer
On an Interview with Nigel Lythgoe
I’m not an avid fan of dancing – charge it to my unreachable childhood dream of becoming a street dancer. However, I go crazy over reality based TV shows, and when So You Think You Can Dance aired, I just had to give watching it a try. The dancers were, of course, the source of my envy, but what fascinates me much are not actually the dancers, but what the judges would say to these therpiscores. As the Idol has the impeccably cruel Simon, SYTYCD has Nigel, who is excited over the outcome of the season this fall. These are just what I think of what he said on an interview December first:

One
It’s already a cliché saying that it takes two to tango, but if a married couple got “professionally split-up” and partnered with other dancers, the tango might not well be the same. Season 6 got the shows first married couples, Ryan and Ashleigh Di Lello. The funny thing is, Ryan is paired with Ellenore Scott, while Ashleigh has Jakob Karr. Nigel reacts on the effect of having married couples this season, saying that it hasn’t really changed the dynamics in the show, and that both Ryan and Ashleigh have been professional competing against each other with their own partners. If I may spice things up, I would say this splitting up move could have added a hint of competitive friction on both Di Lello’s as they could have been toying this idea in their minds: “Hey, honey! See how better I am now without you!” Of course, it’s just a mind thing, and at the end of the day, Ryan and Ashleigh could still be blissfully spending their married life while waiting for their dishwasher to shut off.
Two
Does age matter in dance? Nigel says yes, it does. Season 6 has got competitors aged below 20, and our head judge says this could be an advantage for the teen finalists. True enough, experience is a factor in dancing, and when you say experience, it means being a little older and having experienced a good helping of love and hate, passion and dejection, sensuality and apathy. But then again, with the kind of culture media has bombarded on our youth, the adults could be clueless on the intensity of the minds of our younger population. Well, aging brings out the best in wine, cheese and cold cuts, but we should always remember that our favorite salads are bet eaten fresh and crisp.

Three
First impressions last, but lasts impressions may lead you to be the first. Nigel has been biased against the krumper, Russell Ferguson, and the break dancer, Legacy Perez. Who would ever think their stunts could give them a place in the ballroom dancing scenario? But Nigel, I believe is having a change of heart now, seeing how these to gentlemen can also jive along the classics. Sometimes, a little change can be so appealing. I can’t help but recall the glam rocker Adam Lambert, setting aside his belting power for a classy Motown ballad. It was beautifully devastating!
Well, the essence has been said. In the end, it’s still America’s call for THE next dancer.
